Do Video Games Improve Your Ability to Lucid Dream?

Copyright © Pete Casale of NLP Secrets

Do video games affect your ability to lucid dream? Can lucid dreaming be inspired by video games? Is there any correlation between the two?

I believe there is a relationship; that whatever you do during the day can become the kindling for dreams you have at night. Have you ever spent a lot of the day doing a particular activity, and then found yourself doing the same thing in your dream? What if that activity was a type of virtual reality? Would that virtual reality become your dream reality?

When I was a child, I used to get nightmares. During the climax of terror, the only option was to run or hide. Part of me knew I was just dreaming, and sometimes I would attempt to abort the dream by thinking "wake up!"

However this rarely worked at all, let alone in the moment before getting stabbed, impaled or killed by whatever monster was attacking me. Nightmares were those things that happened every now and then that were just an unfortunate part of life. I would avoid watching horror films, in case they brought on a nightmare that night. But I did not avoid violent video games...

I have always been a fan of video games, and have been playing games since I was five years old (back then on my Commodore 64). One day, when I was about ten years old, I discovered a game called Wolfenstein 3D. This game was different from the others, because it was in first-person perspective. This means that instead of the usual way of controlling a hero, car or spaceship in the third person perspective, I got to look through the eyes of the protagonist:

Lucid Dreaming and Video Games

Needless to say, I spent all day that day playing Wolfenstein 3D. The object of the game was to shoot your way through a Nazi castle and kill Hitler himself.

That night I went to bed, and I had a dream. The dream was that I was being chased by Hitler through an old dusty mansion. It didn't look like Wolfenstein, it looked like real life. I was not the hero with guns and knives, I was myself, ten years old and scared of being captured. I found myself running into a room, closing the door, and hiding in a fireplace. I hoped that Hitler wouldn't find me, but sure enough, the door on the far side of the room opened. Hitler walked in.

I stayed as still and quiet as I could but he kept walking slowly in my direction. I crouched there quietly in the fireplace hoping that he hadn't seen me, but he kept walking closer and closer. I wondered what he might do if he caught me. Stab me? Shoot me? Slowly he kept walking until he was standing right next to the fireplace in which I was hiding. My fear was at a peak.

I snapped. This is MY dream! I jumped out of the fireplace and roared at Hitler. Suddenly I knew I was all-powerful. I glared at Hitler as he stood agape, held up my left arm and suddenly there was a massive machine gun on my arm. My right arm followed, another massive machine gun. I leveled them both directly at Hitler. As I pulled the triggers, he turned and ran. I shot after him, laughing.

That was the last nightmare I've ever had.

Since then, any time a dream has become frightening, the fear has triggered a lucid state. It always follows the same pattern:

Something in the dream causes fearThe fear makes me lucidI shout "this is my dream!"My lucidity allows me to overcome the fear

These days, there are many realistic first-person perspective video games that will allow you to deal with most kinds of fear. For instance, if your nightmares present you with a fear of falling from great heights, I recommend the video games of Prototype or B.A.S.E. Jumping.

If you have nightmares about zombies, Left 4 Dead is fantastic. These first-person video games teach us that the real power is in our own hands. When we die in the game, we just start the level again. Not unlike a lucid dream. And when we get hit in a game, we feel no pain.

No matter what we do in the game, we're still sitting in a comfortable couch in a warm house. The reinforcement that nothing can actually hurt us can transfer into our dream world - transforming our nightmares into lucid dreams.

KIA MOTORS' SUPER BOWL COMMERCIAL WILL ANSWER THE AGE OLD QUESTION OF "WHERE DO BABIES COME FROM?"

"Space Babies" Takes Viewers on A Journey Nine Months in the Making to Introduce the Family-Friendly 2014 Sorento CUV and Kia's Next Generation UVO eServices Voice-Activated Infotainment System

Director Jake Scott helms 60-second mini-movie set on the distant planet "Babylandia;" Sneak preview available this weekend in movie theaters and at youtube.com/kia

Second phase of Sorento's "It has an answer for everything™" campaign is scheduled to air in the fourth quarter of the big game and appear on movie screens nationwide starting February 1

IRVINE, Calif., January 25, 2013 – For generations, inquisitive young minds have asked the burning question that all parents dread. A question that leaves many moms and dads stumbling to find the right words to carefully, and sometimes creatively, navigate the most delicate of situations. On February 3, with more than 100 million people watching, Kia Motors America (KMA) will tell the story that hasn't been told as a flustered father shares an epic tale with his curious young son from behind the wheel of the new 2014 Sorento CUV. Scheduled to air in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVII and directed by Jake Scott, "Space Babies" reveals the existence of a faraway planet known as "Babylandia" and follows infant boys, girls, dogs, pandas and more on their journey to Earth to join their new families. After taking it all in, the curious child begins to offer an alternative theory passed on by a friend but his quick-thinking father calls upon UVO's voice-activated jukebox feature to hurriedly change the subject and survive another day in the adventures of parenthood.

"As the marketing event of the year, the Super Bowl is a high-profile platform that Kia has used very successfully in each of the last three years to launch new vehicles and raise consumer awareness and perception for the brand," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "Every day is an adventure in parenting, and 'Space Babies' is an entertaining look at life's challenges and the many ways the Sorento's long list of technologies and amenities can make getting through the day just a little bit easier."

Created by David&Goliath, KMA's advertising agency of record, a special expanded version of "Space Babies" will be viewable at YouTube.com/Kia leading up to the big game. As one of the fastest growing car companies in the U.S. over the last five years[1], Kia returns as a Super Bowl advertiser for the fourth straight time. After becoming the first advertiser to debut a Super Bowl commercial in movie theaters before the big game last year, "Space Babies" will air on more than 33,000 screens nationwide beginning on February 1 as part of ScreenVision and National CineMedia's FirstLook. "It has an answer for everything™" is a fully integrated marketing campaign incorporating TV, cinema, digital, print, social media and in-dealership components.

"Tight Space"

In the first spot of the Sorento's "It has an answer for everything™" campaign, titled "Tight Space," parental creativity is in high gear when two of the CUV's available features – power-folding mirrors and power liftgate – help a determined father make the slimmest parking garage space manageable while his skeptical wife and children look on. Created by David&Goliath, "Tight Space" spot was directed by Peter Darley Miller and Colin Jeffery and is viewable now at YouTube.com/Kia, and on television.

2014 Sorento

The 2014 Sorento[2] is no mere mid-cycle refresh. It rides on an all-new platform and suspension system, and offers a new V6 engine and more passenger room as well as a new top-of-the-line trim level known as the SX Limited. From a styling perspective, redesigned front and rear fascias incorporate new lighting elements, the 17-inch and 18-inch alloy wheels have been redesigned and a larger 19-inch alloy wheel is offered on the SX as well as the new SX Limited. Inside, the center rack, gear shift, instrument clusters, and soft-touch surfaces all feature a new look. Other new features include second row sliding sunshades and heated seats, panoramic sunroof, a programmable powered lift gate, segment unique, heated second row seat bottoms, and more. The 2014 Sorento will be the first Kia vehicle to offer the next generation voice-activated telematics system, UVO eServices.

Video: Mazda6 GX Grand-Am racer goes where no diesel sedan has gone before

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

There has never been a four-door diesel sedan in the Grand-Am series, until now: The blunt, bewinged grille of the Mazda6 GX has blown right through that wall. It's said that racing improves the breed, but usually the breed has gone on sale when the racing begins. One of the unusual aspects of the Mazda6 GX, on the other hand, is that while the diesel won't go on sale to the public until later this year, it will already have tasted racing blood by the end of the day. That kind of reversal is more likely found with super coupes like the Lexus LFA and Honda NSX.

Mazda has taken class wins at Daytona's 24-hour race a whopping 23 times since 1975, most recently in 2010 with the RX-8 in the GT class. This year the Hiroshima company decided to show off its SkyActiv technology, then turned things up to eleven by opting for its SkyActiv-D instead of the more conventional SkyActiv-G gas engine to run in the new GX class. It will be joined by competitors like the Lotus Evora and Porsche Cayman in the class, nevertheless, at 2.4 liters, it's the smallest engine on the grid.

Time has not been a friend, either – Mazda said that the first five SkyActiv-D engines off the production line went to Speed Source in Coral Gables, Florida, the company that preps Mazda's race vehicles. Still, race driver Jonathan Baumarito on the #70 car said that although the engine's been on the dyno since February of last year, it's only been in the car for about a month and there have been only a couple of test days.

Speed Source owner, team driver and multiple 24-hour winner Sylvain Tremblay – he drove in the teams that won in 2008 and 2010 in the RX-8 – said the big challenge right now is getting the gearing right. Both Tremblay and Baumarito said that the diesel's torque is a plus through the Bus Stop section at the back of the course, entered after coming off the high-speed banked turn. But Tremblay said that the first infield section of horseshoes is more trying because the SkyActiv-D needs to be on boost to get its power on, and that doesn't happen until after 3,500; maintaining that through slow-speed turns and having enough to get the job done through the high-speed ovals is the test.

There are three Mazda6 GXs competing, Everyone is cautiously optimistic about how things might go during the race, but in fairness this has to be looked at as a 24-hour testing session. Road & Track rode shotgun for a lap in the #00 Visit Florida Racing car, you can check out the sounds of diesel at Daytona in the video below.

Video: Watch this man's natural-gas pickup explode as he refuels it

CNG-powered truck explodes while being refilled

We've reported before on the proliferation of natural-gas powered vehicles in the heavily oil-sanctioned state of Iran. Now we've got some further very dramatic circumstantial evidence that not all of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles are as safe as their Iranian owners would hope.

It's hard to say just what caused the violent ending in this pickup refilling video – a KTLA rebroadcast from an unidentified news source – but the result is terrifying. In light of this catastrophic clip, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that CNG vehicles have an excellent safety record here in the US. Follow on below to watch the video clip.
